Letter from the CEO

Counterpart works with communities to ensure they define their own futures. Fundamentally, Counterpart’s name says it all: we are the partners to leaders, organizations, and networks driving positive change for the common good. This work takes many forms: We are a catalyst of homegrown solutions. We are a convener of governments and private sectors who want to work with communities to drive development. We foster community by connecting people who might not otherwise be connected and who can amplify impact.

We help people to help themselves.

We recognize that the people closest to the challenges have the most appropriate solutions.
We see the power in partnerships to get things done.

We embrace unlikely partnerships as an engine for growth and change, just like the partnership that launched us more than 60 years ago when a priest and a movie star joined forces to help communities address the grinding poverty in the wake of World War II.

I know our approaches work since I have not only seen them firsthand but many years ago, I lived them while I was in Sierra Leone with a local NGO. I learned from them that transformative change takes place when people contribute to the solutions to the problems they face. Decades later, that local NGO is still standing strong and supporting so many people in the country, even after many international agencies have gone.

The impact Counterpart delivers transcends projects. Instead, we build trust and create relationships. Leaders thrive when they are connected to networks of support, receive peer mentorship and coaching.

I’ve traveled to countries where Counterpart no longer operates only to find lasting results through organizations that remain doing the work we launched together. I’ve seen the benefits that come from incremental progress scaled to new heights. I see the pride in people when they showcase what they were able to accomplish.

Feeding school children.
Promoting trade by working with farmers, in the US and abroad.
Developing small and medium enterprises to fuel economic growth.

These are the ways the Counterpart mission takes shape today. We are proud of our 60-year legacy leading change. We look forward to moving forward in this next chapter, and welcome your engagement.
