How We Work

The same spirit of collaboration and innovation that sparked unexpected partnerships continues to guide Counterpart today.

Counterpart International was founded by two of the most unlikely partners: a priest and a movie star. What drew them together was a common belief that real change happens when communities mobilize around a shared purpose for the common good.

How We Create Lasting Change

Progress happens when different voices, skills, and perspectives come together in new ways. Counterpart helps to catalyze and convene communities to identify the best ways forward.

  • Community-Led Solutions: Counterpart centers local knowledge and leadership in every program. We listen first then co-create solutions, and ensure communities have ownership over the work from the start.
  • Global and Local Trust: Across the globe, we convene people around shared goals, catalyze collaboration, and strengthen community bonds. Trust enables individuals to take risks, develop new skills, and grow into confident leaders and entrepreneurs.
  • Partnership with Purpose: We work alongside governments, civil society, and the private sector to address entrenched challenges, such as improving child nutrition so students can learn and thrive. Our role is collaborative, not prescriptive.
  • Built for Sustainability: Every Counterpart program includes a clear graduation plan. We design for local institutions to ultimately lead, manage, and fund initiatives independently.
  • Accountability and Stewardship: Counterpart is a careful steward of development resources, adhering to rigorous compliance and financial standards. Our long record of clean audits reflects our commitment to transparency, integrity, and effective program management.

From Partnership to Impact

Every program we implement is built on deep partnership, technical excellence, and a shared commitment to results that endure.

Community at the Center

Lasting progress begins with people leading the way.

At its core, this work is about community. It’s about bringing together farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs, health workers, local leaders, and families to build stronger futures from the ground up. Instead of one-size-fits-all solutions, the focus is on communities leading their own destinies. progress and keep it going for the long run.

Across agriculture, health & nutrition, technology, and leadership & entrepreneurship, the goal is simple: help communities thrive on their own terms.

What does that mean?

The Counterpart Model in Action
