Derek joined Counterpart International as Chief Operating Officer in 2014 with more than 20 years of program management, operations, and strategic planning experience.
Derek began his career as a chemist at Merck & Co., Inc. before working in research planning and project management. He was promoted to Director of Resource and Research Planning, Project Planning and Development at Merck Research Laboratories, where he was responsible for research and development in addition to strategic, project and resource planning.
Derek continued working in program and technology management as a Senior Director of Program Management and Strategic Planning at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and was responsible for leading its annual global planning and prioritization processes.
He expanded his business operations experience while serving as the Chief Operations Officer and General Manager Pathways at Cambridge Healthtech Associates, Inc. before beginning a seven-year tenure at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). Derek joined IAVI as a Senior Director of its Project Management Office and R&D Operations and was then promoted to the Executive Director of R&D Global Operations, where he was responsible for the development, execution and oversight of the R&D global internal and external operations network in the U.S., Europe, Africa and India.

Derek is the co-author of three scientific articles and also holds a patent on an active immunosuppressant.
