Counter-Trafficking in Persons III
Vulnerable groups in Afghanistan face greater risk of trafficking
In 2021, the U.S. State Department identified Afghanistan as one of the worst countries for human trafficking. Since then, many counter-trafficking initiatives in Afghanistan have closed due to increased restrictions on the media and civil society, and reduced funding. The Taliban nullified all previous laws against human trafficking, leaving the infrastructure and access to services in shambles for survivors of trafficking in Afghanistan.
Ensuring trafficking survivors receive the critical care they need
The Counter-Trafficking in Persons III project will work to reduce trafficking cases, increase awareness of and action against trafficking, and strengthen prevention, identification, response, and protection initiatives. We support trafficking survivors with counseling and reintegrate them into their communities. Shelters will be able to continue their operations, providing life-saving care to populations vulnerable to human trafficking, especially children. The project works with media outlets in country to promote public awareness of trafficking. Additionally, the project works to boost the capacity of stakeholders and civil society organizations to protect survivors and prevent further exploitation. By reducing the prevalence of trafficking in Afghanistan, the project is working towards a safer Afghanistan where everyone’s rights, freedoms, and dignity are respected.
