Humanitarian Relief to Earthquake Victims

The year 2008 ushered in destruction to the region of Osh in western Kyrgyzstan with a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hitting on January 1st.  Nearly 3,500 people were displaced and in need of warm clothes, heating devices, shelter and food supplies. Counterpart International's (Counterpart) Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) provided crucial sets of warm clothes to the displaced Kyrgyzstanis to keep them warm while their homes and communities were repaired.

The Osh region is high in the mountains and not easily accessible, especially in the winter months. Roads are blocked due to extreme weather conditions, temperatures reach minus 15-20 degrees Celsius (0-5 degrees Fahrenheit) - making the area even more treacherous than other times of the year.

Counterpart's quick response to the demand for assistance helped many Kyrgyzstanis remain hopeful and healthy while displaced from their homes and often their families.
