Wheelchair Distribution in Georgia
CHAP in Georgia held two wheelchair distribution events in Mtskheta and Tbilisi in spring of 2009. In coordination with the donor organization, Latter-day Saints Charities, as well as US State Department grantees based in Georgia, local NGOs and corporate donors, the events were organized not only to provide mobility to disabled person, but to highlight challenges facing the disabled throughout Georgia.
In this effort, Counterpart International (Counterpart) and its partners ensured television and radio coverage of the events by working in close cooperation with the office of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Governor's Office for the Mtskheta distribution, and in Tbilisi by organizing a short concert by disabled children and singers.
In addition to the eighty-five wheelchairs distributed in Mtskheta and seventy-nine distributed in Tbilisi, disabled recipients and their families also received other invaluable items such as blankets, sheets, hygiene and school kits and other consumables.
After the event in Mtskheta, the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Governor's Office invited the US State Department grantees and LDS Charities to their offices to allow its representatives to become better acquainted with the activities and services these humanitarian organizations provide in Georgia, outline the challenges of the region, and explore new ways of cooperation to resolve these problems.
