Humanitarian Assistance

To bolster the work of Counterpart International's (Counterpart) Maternal Health and Child Survival program in India, called "Jeevan Daan," the Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) has delivered almost $3 million in medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and wheelchairs. As mothers and their children gain access to medical supplies and services, entire communities become healthier.

Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program:
CHAP is a US State Department-funded, rapid response humanitarian commodity distribution program that addresses critical needs of vulnerable populations. Food, clothing, bedding, hospital equipment, hospital supplies and pharmaceuticals are donated to the target groups.

Small Reconstruction Projects (SRPs) are short-term, small-scale renovations of facilities that serve a humanitarian purpose, such as orphanages, hospitals, and schools.  Counterpart works with local partners to plan and execute projects that make concrete, measurable improvements in the lives of those affected.

Counterpart's CHAP and SRP program work in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus (just CHAP), Georgia, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Ocean Freight Reimbursement:
USAID's OFR Program offers subsidies to Private Voluntary Organizations (PVOs) to ship commodities overseas for use in privately funded development and humanitarian assistance programs. This has been critical to the success of Counterpart's programs and operations across the world. While USAID reimburses the costs of ocean freight, participating PVOs pay for other costs, such as commodity acquisition, warehousing, insurance, local transportation and distribution.

Since its inception, Counterpart's OFR program has worked in Afghanistan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Chad, Cambodia, Chile, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Liberia, Lithuania, Mali, Mauritania, Maldives, Nicaragua, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia.
