Support for People Living with HIV/AIDS
As sub-grantee to the USAID-funded Family Health International program, Counterpart International (Counterpart) facilitates access to care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in the Louga, Thies and Kaolack regions of Senegal. The program provides psychosocial and nutritional care and support to PLWHA and their families, orphans and vulnerable children. Access to medical care and psychosocial support is also provided.
- Palliative care, nutritional management and psychosocial support for PLWHAs has touched more than 5,000 people through support groups, cooking demonstrations, home visits, food distribution, etc. More than 360 people have been assisted with transportation to medical visits and the purchase of medications to manage infections.
- Training on the prevention, care and/or treatment of HIV/AIDS including the Integrated Essential Nutrition Services Package and food preparation techniques to support to the use of food distributed under this program was provided to 286 health professionals, community health workers and caregivers.
- Kitchen utensils have been distributed to local PLWHA associations and weight monitoring kits have been given to health service centers.
- Through a joint Counterpart, local government and Peace Corps-supported project, 25 micro-gardens have been developed to provide PLWHAs with access to fresh produce.
- Some 52 income-generating projects, such as bakeries, motorbike taxis and processed fish, products have been supported to provide PLWHA incremental income to support themselves.
