Cameroon

Located in Western Africa, the former French Cameroon gained its independence in 1960 and merged with part of British Cameroon to form the present country in 1961. Cameroon has generally enjoyed political stability, which has permitted the development of agriculture, roads and railways, as well as a petroleum industry. With nearly 41 percent of the population of school-going age, Cameroon's education system is an important point of entry for community development and humanitarian assistance. Counterpart has focused its energy on improving community nutrition and hygiene through school-based programs and boosting school enrollment and attendance rates.
