Sustainable Tourism |
Tourism that sustains or enhances the character of a destination—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the economic well-being of its residents.
—National Geographic Society Center for Sustainable Destinations definition of Sustainable Tourism, supported by Counterpart International (Counterpart).
Counterpart believes sustainable tourism is a viable weapon in the fight against poverty. Tourism is one of the fastest ways funds can be rapidly transferred to a community. Recognized as the world's largest industry, tourism is projected to grow exponentially over the next century. Properly managed, tourism can revitalize culture, improve health, strengthen communities, boost economic development and nurture understanding.
Counterpart works toward ensuring that tourism development is fair and equitable, and able to conserve natural and cultural resources while promoting social sensitivity and cultural integrity. Counterpart strives to do this while maintaining high levels of tourist satisfaction.
Cross-sectoral approaches and partnerships in sustainable tourism:
Counterpart's integrated model for sustainable tourism development involves working with public, private and local communities. Typically Counterpart works with governments, businesses, civil society organizations and local communities to design, implement and manage its programs. Working across sectors is also critical to the success of tourism. Therefore, Counterpart draws upon its own expertise and experience from its own practices, including civil society engagement, improved health, enterprise development and food security.
Counterpart has developed tools that meet the specific needs of the local communities. Unique to Counterpart is the inclusion of innovative ecosystem restoration and conservation programs, such as Forest Gardens and Coral Gardens™. These programs create additional tourism products for visitors that offer tangible economic incentives for communities, while simultaneously conserving the local biodiversity.
