Our Work
Humanitarian Assistance

We get in earlier, stay later and leave when we're no longer needed. Working with local people means working on their timetable and needs, not ours.

Counterpart International's (Counterpart) Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) has mobilized both communities and diverse donor resources to help the most vulnerable populations: children, orphans, the poor, the elderly, the disabled, refugees from war and victims of disasters. CHAP provides a bridge between immediate, basic needs and long-term development. Ensuring people have homes and food may only be the first step in developing a prospering society, but it is an essential one in helping communities help themselves long after the foreign aid disappears.

Since 1994, CHAP has acquired, delivered and tracked over $1 billion worth of humanitarian aid to 57 countries. CHAP has shipped over 6,000 containers worldwide, relying on its network of over 80 dedicated public and private donors to supply a variety of humanitarian assistance to its projects overseas.

The Life of a Donation:

From generous communities in the United States to families in need across the world, CHAP is able to track the movement of such urgently-needed goods the whole way. Learn more about Counterpart's state-of-the-art tracking system.

By starting programs with humanitarian aid and following with technical and economic assistance, communities in developing countries benefit from the transfer of commodities, technical skills, knowledge and ultimately, economic investment. CHAP enables U.S. citizens, communities and organizations to play a direct role in providing assistance to developing countries in a way that has a lasting effect. From this, CHAP has grown into a truly community-based organization—the programs are a practical expression of a neighborly helping hand.

Disaster Response:

CHAP works in emergency situations only when the organization already maintains a presence in the location.

Counterpart responds to natural disasters and emergencies in countries where we maintain a permanent physical presence. In addition to providing needed humanitarian items, such as clothing, tents, blankets, food and medical supplies, CHAP provides emergency and rescue equipment and training to emergency response personnel.

CHAP operations allow for an immediate response when disasters occur. Materials and supplies from CHAP warehouses are diverted from existing projects to meet emergencies. Counterpart's refined acquisition and transportation system makes it easy to identify, acquire, transport and distribute appropriate emergency assistance quickly to where it is needed.
