Small Reconstruction Projects

Counterpart International's (Counterpart) Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) conducts Small Reconstruction Projects (SRPs), which complement current humanitarian programs. The projects are designed to address urgent humanitarian issues and improve the standard of living of beneficiaries by providing access to facilities and amenities that were previously lacking and/or by reconstructing and re-establishing sections or aspects of existing buildings. SRPs are intended for small public institutions that serve a humanitarian purpose such as shelter, health, feeding or education to targeted populations including orphans, elderly pensioners, hospital or clinic patients and school children.

Construction and reconstruction is geared towards small-scale renovation with results that are measurable and comprehensive and are completed within no more than six months after the start date. The projects are funded by the U.S. Department of State Office of the Coordinator for Assistance to Europe and Eurasia (EUR/ACE) through small grants at up to $12,000.

In addition to the initial grant, SRPs have the further benefit of enabling and encouraging community involvement, whether through labor or reasonable amounts of additional funds to help expand the project. Moreover, CHAP often works with several partner organizations to help donate additional commodities or services to the recipient organizations after the completion of the project, greatly expanding the initial efforts.
