Health and Child Survival |
Through knowledge and increased access to services, Counterpart International (Counterpart) mobilizes communities that are suffering from high infant and maternal mortality rates to use innovative tools to improve their health and well-being. Working closely with partner NGOs and local ministries of health, Counterpart builds their capacity and increases the reach of effective maternal and child health programs.
Counterpart's Global Health strategy is to create de-centralized programs with locally based implementation. Experience has shown that this system encourages a high level of community participation and a sense of community ownership of the project, resulting in sustainable improvements to the overall health of the target population.
Partnering with local organizations, Counterpart designs programs that are culturally and technologically appropriate for the populations involved. The organization works within traditional belief systems to change individual behaviors and uses an integrated, transparent strategy to encourage the active participation of the entire community and relevant government agencies. This custom approach has improved the health of mothers and their children on three continents.
Programs are participatory, involving all stakeholders in the planning, design, implementation and monitoring so that the programs concentrate on community-specific needs. Special care is taken to involve women in the process, as they play a crucial role in family well-being. Counterpart also seeks to promote male responsibility, so that men take a more active role in the care and well-being of children and elderly.
