New Doors and Water Supply at Boarding School for Children in Moldova
Situation
The Boarding School for Children with Psychoneurological Diseases is located in Chinisheuts Village, about 50 miles north of Moldova's capital Chisinau. More than 150 children of various ages attend and reside at the boarding school. The students have psychoneurological diseases and are in need of constant supervision; the boarding school combines their education with specialized medical treatment and rehabilitation.
The school was built in 1972, and no major repairs have been made to it in over 35 years. One of the most striking problems is the condition of the doors. The outer and inner doors are in disrepair. The temperature in the dormitory, classrooms and medical rooms drops very low during the winter.
The school also has no running hot water in its kitchen and sanitary facilities, though hot water is available in the newly refurbished boiler building.
What We Did
With funding from the US Department of State "Small Reconstruction Projects" initiative, Counterpart International installed 18 new inner and 5 outer doors and set up 408 meters of hot water pipeline.
Installation of the new doors provided the school dormitory and study areas with better insulation and made the school more weather-and sound-proof. It greatly improved the living conditions of the children and their caretakers. It will allow them to stay healthier during the winter season and more comfortable throughout the year.
Installation of new hot water pipeline will have an obvious positive impact on the living, healthcare and rehabilitation conditions of the school children. At the same time, bringing hot water to the kitchen will improve working conditions of its personnel, making it easier to process the food and ensure proper kitchen daily maintenance.
