Counterpart Improves Living Conditions at Rehabilitation Center in Osh, Kyrgyzstan

Counterpart International improved the living conditions for children with disabilities at a Rehabilitation Center with funding from the US Department of State and in cooperation with AUB-Charity Foundation (Asian Universal Bank). This Small Reconstruction Project included renovation of patients’ rooms, lavatories and showers; and ensuring more sanitary and comfortable accommodations.

The Children’s Rehabilitation Center was established as a part of Osh City Hospital in 1990. In 2004, it was reorganized into an independent entity to serve disabled children from the country’s south. The Center is the only specialized patient care institution providing rehabilitation assistance in the southern region. Annually more than 7,400 children with different pathologies of respiratory, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and various trauma patients receive medical treatment at the Center.

The Center’s substandard conditions did not allow provision of high-quality treatment to the children. Its indoor lavatories, drain and waste system had not functioned for many years; children had to use an outdoor toilet, even in the winter, and showers had never been installed.

Counterpart was able to reconstruct the lavatories, bathrooms and 10 patient rooms at the Center; and fully replace all existing water pipes, old lavatory pans and sinks.
